Stressed?
If we think about it, we all know that the mind influences our physiology in many ways — from stress to sexual arousal and many things in between. Staying present and changing the way you think can improve your physical health and well-being. Our mind certainly won't cure everything, but both in the short-term and long-term a healthy mindset is a key component to a healthy body.
The Mayo Clinic reflects that stress symptoms can affect your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behavior. 9 of 10 doctor’s visits are stress related. Knowing how to manage it and being able to recognize common stress symptoms to allow you to change your thoughts and feelings and behaviors to manage them could take away a lot of that stress. Addressing the cause of stress can also change the many disorders and maladaptive behaviors that stem from it.
In fact, studies have shown spontaneous remissions of disease through just the use of our minds. They have also shown that a percent of this dis-ease is psychosomatic. A psychosomatic illness is a disorder in which people have a real disability with significant levels of suffering, but where the disability cannot be explained by medical tests or by physical examination.
What if we could identify the source of dis-ease or our stress and turn down our emotional response to it in the moment? Is it possible to heal ourselves through our minds?
In a study of 3500 people with chronic disease - Spontaneous Remission Project - 11% of people were healed with a placebo from chronic diseases, and 22% were healed with meditation. This result from placebos and meditation is proof of the power of our mind to heal the body.
Most of the cases from this study revolved around people with Stage 4 cancers who either declined conventional treatment or were given treatment deemed by doctors to be inadequate for cure. But the Spontaneous Remission Project also includes case studies of people who had remissions from heart failure, autoimmune diseases, a gunshot wound to the head, and HIV.
This means that if we can turn up our stress and emotional responses, then we can turn them down (with some simple guidance). How can you access your subconscious to change the limiting beliefs, misperceptions, events and traumas that triggered the stress which caused the dis-ease to begin with?
