Refocus

I’m getting away for a while to Refocus. Refocus is the fourth pillar of  my 5R’s of Good Decisions. It is imperative for your brain and your body to rest and recover just as taking a five-minute break every 60 to 90 minutes will increase your productivity. It is important for our mental health to get away for rest and recuperation.

Of course, one of the issues is that type A’s generally take their computer with them and don’t fully get away. It is especially needed for those in Northern climates to get away.  It is a time when going South allows us to reexperience the outdoors and sunshine that we need regularly.

Refocusing on your most important things sometimes takes a while just to unwind the mind from its chaotic normal experience. Depending on how long this takes only indicates just how chaotic your ‘normal’ is.

Learning to rest is a big part of it. There are seven different types of rest and then sleep. Sleep and rest are not the same thing, although many of us incorrectly confuse the two. We go through life thinking we’ve rested because we have gotten enough sleep — but in reality, we are missing out on the other types of rest we desperately need. The result is a culture of high-achieving, high-producing, chronically tired and chronically burned-out individuals. We’re suffering from a rest deficit because we don’t understand the true power of rest. The seven types of rest are: Physical, Mental, Sensory, Creative, Emotional, Social, and Spiritual rest. The three most impacted by Refocusing are Mental, Sensory and Emotional rest.

Recharging these faculties is difficult in our normal workday world. Focusing on emotional, sensory, and mental rest when you are able to get away can create the calm you seek faster. Three areas to focus on are: turn off your brain from conversations (email and work) from the day, intentionally unplug from electronics, and make the time and space.

Is it time to take time to refocus, let me know how I can help?
