Identifying Blind-Spots
I have heard so many say, that if I am blind to something in myself how can I identify blind spots?
We would all admit to not being able to always know what we don’t know. There is some stigma tied to us having blind spots. I hate to tell you, but everyone has them. And for those of you who think we do not, THAT BELIEF is a blind spot. Having the blind spot is not a fault. But an unwillingness to examine your blind spots is gravely affecting your leadership and relationships!
Some things to look for when you don’t know what you don’t know!
Equating leadership with appearing all-knowing
Not questioning your information and sources
Not examining things that trigger you or you want to avoid
Not reframing challenges to opportunities
Listening to speak rather than to understand
Not forgiving yourself
Blaming others or making it other people's responsibility
Not getting your team’s feedback
Not seeking professional help
Identifying your blind spots in your car is easy — a quick glance will reveal whatever your rearview mirror isn't showing you. However, finding them in areas of your life is harder. However, learning about your blind spots and taking steps to address them is really hard.
We will miss our blind spots if we only seek out information that confirms our existing beliefs or ideas. This is what's known as confirmation bias, and it can severely limit our field of vision. Seeking diverse perspectives can be incredibly helpful for expanding your awareness.
People naturally have a self-serving bias in which they view their abilities as the cause of their successes, but they blame their failures on external factors. To overcome it, ask those close to you what they see in your behaviors, and how, from their perspective, you can improve.
Blind spots can sabotage a leader's impact and cause followers to question the direction that the leader is taking. Your blind spots are not outside. They are inside. Like a pilot flying blind, we all need some guidance and a good radar system! Let me know when you want to start?
