Don't Worry, be Happy

Sunday was National Happiness Day. The pursuit of happiness is one that humans have been working toward since the beginning of time. Is it possible to experience happiness in the middle of a chaotic world and negative circumstances?

The concept of “happiness” is often hard to accurately define. Living the good life, flourishing, self-actualization, joy, and purpose are words that come to mind with happiness.

Positive emotions are a prime indicator of happiness. Positive emotions include hope, interest, joy, love, compassion, pride, amusement, and gratitude. Of these, many studies have found that practicing gratitude can have a significant impact on feelings of hope and happiness. Start each day and end the evening by acknowledging three things you’re grateful for. Do this for two months, and others will notice a difference in your attitude.

Performing random acts of kindness can help you feel more satisfied. Giving a sincere compliment or smiling is a quick, easy way to brighten someone’s day while giving your own happiness a boost. Have a compassionate mindset - practice kind attention. For example, try to make eye contact with a stranger and smile while thinking "I wish you well."

Stress is a happiness robber, if you’re tense, and you feel as though you just might lose it. Practice diaphragmic breathing to calm yourself down. Then smile or laugh a lot. It uses less muscles and is infectious.
