Letting Go

Why is it so difficult to let go of our past? We are creatures of habit. We grow accustomed to certain emotions, even negative ones, we don’t notice how they affect us on a daily basis. We don’t realize that we’re stuck. But our unique emotional habits have a profound influence on the way we look at life, the way we act and how good we are at moving on from our past.

Letting go is a powerful tool for improving your mental health and well-being. It can:

·      Reduce stress and anxiety

·      Improve mood

·      Increase self-esteem and confidence

·      Increase resilience

·      Improve relationships

·      Embrace the present moment

Letting go can be a very challenging process, often due to the emotional attachment we develop to people, experiences, and possessions. Some reasons:

·      Fear of the unknown

·      Attachment to past memories

·      Fear of failure or regret

·      Difficulty processing emotions

·      Need for control

·      Lack of self-compassion

·      Unhealthy coping mechanisms

Despite the challenges, letting go is a vital step in personal growth and emotional well-being. It allows us to release ourselves from the burdens of the past, embrace the present moment, and move towards a more fulfilling future. Some tips for learning to let go:

·       Acknowledging and accepting your feelings: Trying to suppress or ignore your feelings will only make them stronger.

·       Challenging your negative thoughts: 50% of your perceptions are not the truth.

·       Focusing on forgiveness: Is not about condoning the actions of others or the circumstances; it is about releasing yourself from the burden of anger and resentment.

·       Practicing mindfulness: focusing one's awareness in the present moment, while accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations non-judgmentally.

·       Seeking help: a mind health coach allows faster, stronger returns.

Identifying our emotional habits starts the shift toward a more positive experience. Our emotions are like a muscle: We can train ourselves to feel frustrated, sad, stressed or we can learn how to let go and experience the opposite emotions, we choose to hold on or let go?
