The Leader’s Mind

As I prepare to give a talk at the Next Level Networking meeting on The Leader’s Mind, I was  reminded of why I got into the Mind Health field. I worked with and called on C-Level leaders for years and led and coached CEO’s in peer groups. Yet, I was always amazed at the pervasiveness of issues of procrastination,  perfectionism, imposture syndrome and general indecision that they carried. Don’t get me wrong. These leaders had great skills and abilities and were running  growing companies. However, most knew they were not accomplishing what they were truly capable of. They just didn’t know how to fix it.

Of course, as with most challenges, the problem is not the problem. It is our thinking about the problem where the issue lies (the six inches between our ears). It emanates from the blind spots, limiting beliefs, patterns, and habits that keep leaders from becoming who they could be as leaders. It’s about discovering that it is not about skills and abilities. It is about your energy, empathy and focus of your mind.

Many know how they should be thinking but are not seeing in their leadership. I created an acronym as a reminder of what could be for a Leader’s M.I.N.D.

Mindful – being aware, present, non-judgmental, responding, and reflective

Inspiring – directing, creating, living values, connectedness, stimulating the environment, motivating others, growth mindset, decisive

Nurturing – fostering trust, encouraging discussion, cultivating accountability, reframing, uncovering conflict, committed, creating results

Discovering – constant learning, discerning, being curious, coaching/mentoring, listening

Operating in these traits of a leader on a daily basis can seem all consuming. Start by scoring each on a scale of 1-10 with 10 as amazing and 1 as sucks to see where you start. Work on one per week with intention and see amazing benefits in just six months.
