THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF WELLNESS
Wellness is a broad concept that means being healthy in all aspects of life, throughout life. I have shared before the Eight Dimensions of Wellness. These dimensions are interconnected and build or deplete each other.
1. Emotional: Coping effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships.
2. Spiritual: Expanding our sense of purpose and meaning in life.
3. Intellectual: Recognizing creating abilities and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills.
4. Physical: Recognizing the need for physical activity, diet, sleep, nutrition.
5. Occupational: Personal satisfaction and enrichment derived from one's work.
6. Financial: Satisfaction with current and future financial situations.
7. Environmental: Occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being.
8. Social: Developing a sense of connection, belonging, and a well-developed support system.
It is widely felt that emotional regulation is the most important aspect of a healthy life. If this is not practiced, the others cannot be optimized. Emotional wellness involves being emotionally self-aware (pursuing to remain in the present, identifying current and desired emotions and triggers), practicing mindfulness and grounding techniques, challenging and reframing negative thoughts, developing healthy coping technics (nutrition, exercise, hydration, rest and sleep) and intentionally pursuing a healthy lifestyle (the other 7 dimensions).
People with healthy emotional wellness are confident, have control over their feelings and behavior and can better deal with difficult situations. It is a skill that requires building resiliency and allows us to overcome the hurdles of life. When feeling emotionally out of sorts, here are some ways to overcome:
· Physical activity: Exercise can help reduce stress and improve your mood.
Healthy lifestyle: Prioritize sleep, nutrition, and hydration.
Social connection: Spend time with loved ones and engage in social activities.
Creative outlets: Explore hobbies, writing, or music to express your emotions.
Assess yourself! How are you doing in:
Building healthy relationships
Asking for help
Being resilient
Identifying your current and desired feelings
Expressing your feelings to people you trust
Learning and working in your strengths
Working on things you want to improve
Celebrating your accomplishments
Developing assertiveness
Having a positive self-image
Remember, emotional regulation is a skill that takes time and practice. Be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress. If you find that you are struggling to manage your emotions, don't hesitate to reach out.
